Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
An atom (or group of atoms) that have an electric charge.
What are the two types of ion?
Cation
Anion
What is a cation?
An ion with a positive charge.
What is an anion?
An ion with a negative charge.
As a general rule, what element is not contained in any inorganic ions?
Carbon.
Which ion is found in haemoglobin proteins?
Iron Ions (Fe2+).
What determines pH levels?
pH is calculated on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+).
What is a function of sodium ions?
Helping the transport of Glucose and Amino acids across membranes through co-transport.
More H+ ions has what effect on the pH?
It decreases pH.
Which inorganic ion is used in the co-transport of glucose and amino acids?
Sodium (Na+).
Less H+ ions has what effect on the pH?
In increases pH.
How many inorganic ions are present in haemoglobin?
Four Iron Ions.
What is the main functions of phosphate ions?
They are an essential component of ATP and DNA.
What is the structure of a phosphate ion?
PO43-
What common biological molecules contain phosphorus groups?
DNA, RNA, ATP
