Inorganic Ions Flashcards
1
Q
What are inorganic ions?
A
- substances that occur in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms
- some in high concentrations and others in very low concentrations
2
Q
Name examples of inorganic ions.
A
- hydrogen ions
- sodium ions
- iron ions
- phosphate ions
3
Q
What is the purpose of hydrogen ions?
A
- determines the pH of substances
- the more hydrogen ions present, the lower the pH (becomes more acidic)
4
Q
What is the purpose of iron ions?
A
a componant of haemoglobin whch is an oxygen carrying molecule in red blood cells
5
Q
What is the purpose of sodium ions?
A
it’s involved in co-transport of glucose and amino acids
6
Q
What is the purpose of phosphate ions?
A
is a component of ATP and nucleotides
