Q

Describe the process of ATP hydrolase.

A
  • there is small activation energy required to break covalent bond holding last ATP molecule
  • this bond is broken by the enzyme ATPase or ATP hydrolase and a large amount of energy is released
  • it produces ADP and a phophate molecule

Q

What is the eqution for ATP hydrolase?

A

ATP + H2O → ADP + Pi + energy

the i in Pi says that the phosphate molecule is inorganic

Q

What happens after ATP hydrolase?

A
  • ADP and phosphate is released recycled back into ATP trhough condensation
  • it is catalysed by ATP synthase
  • and is an example of a phosphorylation reaction

it occurs in respiration and photosynthesis

Q

What can the phosphate molecule produced at the end of ATP hydrolase be used for?

A

it makes compounds more reactive by phosphorylating them

this will speed up reactions

Q

What are the properties of ATP?

A
  • immediate source of a manageable amount of energy
  • ATP is stored in small quantities so it can quickly be reformed from ADP
  • can be used in a multitude of processes
