INORGANIC IONS Flashcards
Define Inorganic
A molecule or ion that has no more than one carbon atom
Define Organic
Molecules that have a high proportion of carbon atoms
Micronutrients
We need these in a trace of concentrations
Macronutrients
Needed in smaller concentrations
Why does the body need copper (Micronutrient)
Copper plays a role in the formation of red blood cells
Why does the body need Iron
Iron is a major constituent of haemoglobin without enough iron there are not enough red blood cells to transport oxygen
Why do we need Magnesium (Mg2+)
Magnesium is an important constituent of chlorophyll therefore needed for photosynthesis
What happens if there is a lack of magnesium ?
Plants without magnesium in their soil may then go on to have yellow leaves and a condition know as Chlorosis
What happens to growth without magnesium ?
Without magnesium growth is often stunted as mammals need magnesium or their bones
List three uses of Phosphate ions
-Used for making nucleotides including ATP
-essential for the creation of DNA ,cell membranes and bone and teeth growth
Why do we need Calcium (Ca2+)
-calcium is an important structure component of bones and teeth
-component of plant cell walls providing strength
Condensation reactions ?
When 2 units are joined together in biochemistry producing water
Hydrolysis Reaction ?
When 2 units are broken apart a molecule of water is usually produced
Why are nitrate ions needed ?
Required to make DNA and amino acids
4 organic molecules
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Lipids
- Nucleic acids
