Inner ear Flashcards
1
Q
How is it structured?
A
Semicircles which are made up of
- Bony labyrinth
- Membranous labyrinth
Swellings:
- Utricle
- Saccule
Conchlae
2
Q
Bony labyrinth
A
- Entrance through the oval window
- Contains peri-lymph fluid
- Contains the saccule and the Utricle
3
Q
Membranous labyrinth
A
-Contains endolymph
4
Q
Semicircular canals
A
Posterior to the vestibule Bony labyrinth
Have 5 openings
5
Q
Cochlea
A
- Spiral shape
- Receives sound in the form of vibrations
- Contains the cochlear duct, Scala timpani and the organ of Corti
6
Q
What is the organ of Corti responsible for?
A
It is responsible for hearing
7
Q
How does heating occur
A
- Middle ear responsible for transferring sound vibration to Inner ear
- Strapes conducts vibrations into the oval window of the inner ear
- Pressure wave in fluid of cochlear
- Hairs in cochlear convert the sound fibres into nervous impulses which are carried to the brain stem via CN VII
8
Q
How does balance work?
A
- Semi-circular canals responsible for head-rotation: allow your eyes to fix on something when your head is moving (vestibulo-ocular reflex)
- Saccule: detects linear acceleration in the vertical plane
- Utricle : detect linear acceleration in the horizontal plane
9
Q
Which are the muscles connected to the inner ear
A
Tensor timpani - to malleus
Stadedius- to stapes
10
Q
Function of the tensor timpani?
A
Increases the tension on tympanic membrane
Which dampens the amplitude of vibrations
