Innate Immunity Flashcards
Innate Immuntiy DEF
Defenses we are born with that consists of immune mechanisms that are hard wired to recognize and neutralize a broad range of threats.
Innate Immunity (characteristics)
Consists of 2 lines of defenses that Do not function to allow specific recognition of invaders and pathogens as it also lacks memory component to fight off previous invaders.
Innate Immunity’s First Line of Defense is Composed of 2 types of barriers and Microbiota.
Physical BArriers- Epidermis acts as a tough protective barrier, & Mucous membranes line the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts.
CHEMICHAL BARRIERS- Secretions such as mucus, saliva, tears, and (stomach) hydrochloric acid aid in neutralization and eradication of pathogens.
MICROBIOTA- Commensal bacteria on the skin and mucous membranes compete with potential pathogens and produce substances that inhibit their growth.
Second Line of Defense is composed of
Internal mechanisms and cells that respond to pathogens in the forms of:
-Inflammation which (increases blood flow and wbc accumulation at the site of the infection,
-fever, which( inhibits pathogen growth
CELLS- being
Phagocytes- which engulf and digest pathogens
Natural Killer cells- that target and destroy infected cancerous cells
Dendritic cells- cells that process antigens and present them to T cells, linking innate and adaptive immunity
