Adaptive immunity Flashcards
Adaptive Immunity is
A specific immune response that develops over time to fight off a specific pathogens involving activation of lymphocytes B and T cells.
- taking place primarily within the lymphatic organs and bloodstream, adaptive immunity generates long lasting memory cells that enable a faster and stronger response upon re-exposure to the same antigen.
The 2 types of adaptive immunity are
Cell mediated- which is when cytotoxic T cells directly attack invading antigens. This is effective against intracellular pathogens, some cancer cells and foreign tissue transplants.
The other type of Adaptive immunity is
Antibody Mediated- This process of immunity calls for B cells to transform into plasma cells making antibodies or immunoglobulins. This works against extracellualr pathogens in fluids outside of the cells.
Both of these types work together,
And are both Aided by helper T cells
