Injury Rehabilitation Methods Flashcards
Main 5 rehabilitation methods
Cryotherapy and Cryogenic chambers
Hyperbaric chambers
Hydrotherapy
Proprioceptors training
Strength training
Cryotherapy
Use of cold temperatures to treat injuries
Related to rice principle - rest, ice, compress, elevate
Coldness decreases blood flow to the injured area, reduces swelling
Cryogenic chambers
Socks, gloves, swimming costume 3 mins
Works because:
- reduces blood to injury = reduced swelling
- vasoconstriction + dilation
- increase in o2 always helps injury
- reduces DOMS
Hyperbaric chambers (5)
Pressurised chambers with 100% oxygen
Speeds up recovery time
Works as more oxygen to injured area, o2 diffuses into plasma, reducing swelling
Stimulates WBC growth
Pressure increases blood flow to injured areas
Hydrotherapy
Exercising in warm water
Squats,lunges,running,cycling in water
Works because :
- Warm water increases blood flow to muscles
- buoyancy of water takes strain of injured areas
- water can be used as resistance to train against, builds strength in injured area
Proprioceptive training
Hopping, jumping and balance exercises to restore lost Proprioception
Proprioception is the ability for your brain to communicate with your muscle
Gait exercises and wobble boards
Strength training
Resistance to build strength around injured joints
Strengthens body to reduce injury but also helps to build lost muscle after injury
Increases stability at jointers
Improves core strength to aid posture
Other important rehabilitation techniques
- massage/foam rollers
- compression garments
- physiological reasons for methods used in injury
- rehabilitation
- sleep + nutrition
- recovery
