Injury Prevention Methods Flashcards
5 preventions of injury method
Screening
Protective equipment
Warming up
Flexibility training
Taping and bracing
Screening
Prevents injury, provides rehab, restores muscle imbalances and monitors improvements
Identifies musculoskeletal condition of the athlete
Not always accurate could have false negatives
Can increase anxiety for players who need them in case there’s a problem
Protective equipment
Football - ankle and shin pads
Rugby - scrum cap
Cricket - helmet
Hockey - shin guards
Squash - eye guards
Warm up
Increase temp of muscles makes more pliable
Stretch increases pliability
PNF stretching
More oxygen by more blood around the body
Flexibility
Types of stretching :
Static (30s)
Active (individually holding the stretch)
Passive (partner pushes the stretch further)
Dynamic (on the move)
Ballistic (bouncing)
PNF
Pros and cons of flexibility training
+ increased pliability
+ less likely to injure
+ helps performance
- if not warmed up, can tear musc;es
- if overstretch muscle you can lose power
Taping
Provides extra joint support to aid recovery
Rigid tape for joints
Stretchy tape for muscles
Brace
Prevent unwanted movement + stabilises joint
