Injury Flashcards
Acute injury
Sudden injury caused by specific impact or traumatic event where sharp pin is felt immediately
Chronic injury
Injury that occurs after playing sport for long time overuse injury
ACUTE INJURIES
- fractures
- dislocations
- strains
- sprains
Fractures
Brake or crack in bone
- simple or closed is a clean break
- compound or open is when soft tissue is damaged
Dislocations
Ends of bones are forced out of position
Occurs at joints
Strains
Pulled muscle muscle fibres are stretched too far
Sprain
Occur to ligaments when they are stretched too far
CHRONIC
Achilles tendinitis
Stress fracture
Tennis elbow
Achilles’ tendonitis
Causes pain and inflammation of tendon
Located at back of ankle connected to gastrocnemius and used for walking running and jumping
Stress fractures
Most common in weight bearing bones in legs when there is an increase in amount and intensity of exercise
Happen when muscles become fatigued so can’t absorb the added shock of exercise so transfer the stress overload over to the bone and results in a tiny crack
Tennis elbow
Occurs in muscles attached to elbow used to straighten the wrist
Muscles and tendons become inflamed and tiny tears occur on outside of elbow
Screening
Identify those at risk of complications from exercise prepare performers for their sport and enhance performance and reduce injury
It can detect problems early
However not 100% accurate and can miss a problem
And increase anxiety
Injury prevention
Active stretching Warm up Screening Protective equipment Taping and bracing
Taping and bracing
Taping a weak point can help with support and stability to reduce risk of injury.
Taping can be used on muscle kinesiotape.
Bracing gives extra stability to muscles and joints that are weak or previously injured.
Injury rehabilitation methods
Proprioceptors training Strength training Hyperbaric chambers Cryotherapy Hydrotherapy
