Injuries Flashcards
Arita
“active recovery is the answer”
sensible mobilization helps:
promote cirkulation of fluids (lymphatic, blood) to the area
helps to prevent build-up of scar tissue
Spinal issues
Discus Problems
- protrusion Or “bulging”
- prolaps or hernia/rupture
Osteophytes /bone spur
Spine -Pelvis relationship
Posterior tilt
-more pressure on the front part of the discs
Anterior tilt
-vice versa
Posterior herniation common modifications
In forward folding poses, encourage students to keep the spine straight and neutral
(Often necessary to bend the knees due to tight hamstrings)
Backbending poses are often tolerated better, because the pressure from the bulging disc gets relieved
Sciatic pain
Caused by impingement of the sciatic nerve bundle either through bone or soft tissue compression at the nerve root or by tight piriformis muscle
Sprain
Ligament injury
- from tearing a few fibers to complete rupture
- take a Long time to heal
- even af ter healing lack previous elasticity
- prone to re-injury
Common sense modifications
- avoid strong pressure or stretching
- force closure/muscular support -approach in Rehabilitation
Whiplash syndrome
Often a result of a car accident
Always involves soft tissue injuries to muscles, ligaments etc., sometimes also cervical joints
Common sense modifications:
Encourage students to avoid movements that hurt their neck
Knee pain
Four common types of knee pain issues:
Injury of one the four ligaments of the knee
Meniscus injury
Patellar dysfunction
IT-Band overly tight
Common sense modifications: During the class use a range of motion that doesn't aggravate the pain in the knee
Strains
So called muscle pull
Modifications:
Tell students to be cautious when stretching to not overdo it
Some stretching though is very beneficial to the strained tissue because it enhances the blood flow to the area and prevents overly scarring
hernias
Connective tissue injury/weakness that causes the underlying tissue (muscle, fat, sometimes even organ like intestines) to bulge through the connective tissue
Some common hernias include:
Hiatal hernia: part of stomach herniates out of abdominal cavity causing acid reflux and other issues
——>avoid inversions
Inguinal hernia: Abdominal tissue like fat or intestine loop bulges through lower abdominla wall often due to weak muscle tissue and causing a bulge in the groin area
—–>avoid creating too much pressure in the abdominal cavity, possibly avoiding some pranayama techniques or even too straining asanas
