Anatomy of Bones and Joints Flashcards
1
Q
Purpose of the bones
A
- Create structure and support
- Protect the internal organs
- Allow for movement at joints through muscles and tendons
- Calcium and mineral salts storage
- Production of blood cells
2
Q
Composition of the bones
A
1/3 is made of collagen, which is organic and extremely elastic
2/3 is made of mineral salts - non-organic - which gives the bones their hardness
3
Q
Types of joints
A
Synovial joint (knne, shoulder etc.)
Cartilaginous joints (between vertebrae)
Immovable joints (skull)
4
Q
Types of synovial joints
A
Ball and socket
Hinge
Pivot (between C1 and C2)
Saddle
Condyloid
Plane
5
Q
Types of cartilage
A
Articular (hyaline) Cartilage
-Coats the ends of the bones to reduce friction
-very smooth
-Damage: osteoarthritis
Fibrocartilage
-tough and durable
-provides shock absorption for example between intervertebral discs
