Injectable anesthetics: general Flashcards
Injectable anesthetics are used for
induction of general anesthesia in small and large animals
Injectable anesthetics may be used alone for short surgical or diagnostic procedures - example?
cat neuter
once injected, the effects last until
the drug is metabolized and excreted from the body
inductions are:
easy, fast, predictable
__% of injectable anesthetics are distributed to the vessel-rich group
75%
the vessel-rich group includes what?
- brain/cns
- heart
- liver
- kidney
- endocrine glands
__% of injectable anesthetics are distributed to muscle
20%
__% of injectable anesthetics are distributed to fat
5%
__% of injectable anesthetics are distributed to other tissues (bone, cartilage, connective tissue)
1%
2 reasons concentration of injectable anesthetics goes down/decreases
- drug was metabolized
2. the drug leaves the CNS and goes into other tissues in the body (i.e. muscle)
why do we need to be careful not to give too much more of a drug when its effects start to decrease?
you can overdose because the drug IS still in the body
the most you should give of a 2nd dose would be about how much?
~ half the original injection
if that is not enough to work, what would your next step probably be?
gas the animal
