inheritance Flashcards
gene
a specific sequence of bases on a chromosome that codes for one or more polypeptides
allele
different forms of a gene. there can be many different forms of the same gene. most organisms carry two copies, one from each parent
nucleotides
unit of dna or rna. consists of a nitrogenous base, pentose sugar and phosphate
genotype
genetic constitution of an organism
phenotype
the expression of the genotype and its interaction with the environment
dominant
an allele that is always expressed in the phenotype of an organism. represented by a capital letter
recessive
an allele that is only expressed if two copies are present. represented by a lowercase letter
codominant
alleles are both expressed in the phenotype and neither is recessive
locus
fixed position of a gene on a chromosome
homozygous
organism carried two copies of the same allele
heterozygous
organisms carries two different alleles
carrier
individual carrying an allele that is not expressed in the phenotype that could be passed onto the offspring
multiple alleles
a gene that has two or more alleles. an organism will have two alleles, one on each homologous pair of chromosomes
