defence mechanisms ⭐️ Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the main defence mechanisms of the body
A
“General non specific defence - skin, hydrochloric acid in stomach, phagocytosis
Specific defence - B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes”
2
Q
Explain how the body distinguishes between it’s own cells and foreign cells
A
All cells have protein antigens on their cell surface membrane that are specific to the individual. There are millions of lymphocytes with specific proteins on their membranes. The lymphocytes are complementary to the proteins on pathogens and other foreign material but not complementary to the body’s own cells
