Inheritance Flashcards
What is an allele?
A version of a gene
Can be dominant or recessive
What is the difference between dominant and recessive alleles?
Dominant = always expressed
Recessive = only expressed if both alleles are recessive
Define phenotype
Observable characteristic resulting from one’s genotype and its interaction with the environment
e.g someone with green eyes has green alleles
Define genotype
Combination of alleles an organism has
(this is like Bb or BB or bB
this is the combination they got one from each parent)
What is the difference between heterozygous and homozygous?
Heterozygous = 2 different Alleles e.g bB or Bb
Homozygous = 2 same alleles e.g BB or bb
During sexual reproduction, each offspring…?
inherits 2 alleles
one from each parent
Why do twins look similar?
They have identical DNA/Genes
they are clones
they came from the same embyro
Even though twins have the same DNA why do they look a bit different?
environmental factors
they might have different weights because of their diet
Different hair styles maybe one has tattoos and dyed hair
maybe one has mutation in their DNA
