Inguinal Canal Flashcards
What is the inferior border of the inguinal canal?
Inguinal ligament
Attaches from ASIS to pubic tubercle
What is the anatomical landmark of the deep inguinal ring?
Midpoint of the inguinal ligament
Medial demarcated by the inferior epigastric vessels
What is the anatomical landmark of the superficial inguinal ring?
2cm above and medial to pubic tubercle
What is the superior border of the inguinal canal?
Internal oblique and transversus abdominus
What is the anterior border of the inguinal canal?
Skin
Aponeurosis of EO
What is the posterior border of the inguinal canal?
Transversalis fascia
What are the contents of the inguinal canal?
Round ligament (F) Spermatic cord (M) Ilioinguinal nerve (nerve root L1)
What are the three fascial layers of the spermatic cord?
From outermost to innermost
External spermatic (formed by EO aponeurosis)
Cremasteric (formed by IO)
Internal spermatic (formed by transversalis fascia)
What are the contents of the spermatic cord?
3 arteries - testicular, artery to the vas and cremasteric artery
3 nerves - ilioinguinal, cremasteric and sympathetic fibres
3 other structures: vas deferens, lymphatics and pampiniform venous plexus
What are the borders of Hasselbach’s triangle?
Medial: Rectus Abdominus
Lateral: Inferior Epigastric Artery
Inferior: Inguinal Ligament
Which structure strengthens the posterior wall of the inguinal canal?
Conjoint tendon
What does the ilioinguinal nerve innervate?
Mons pubis
Labia majora
Conjoint tendon
What is the course of the ilioinguinal nerve?
Passes down the anterior abdominal wall between the external and internal oblique and exits via the superficial inguinal ring
