Anterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
What are the layers of the anterior abdominal wall, from superficial to deep?
Skin Superficial fascia: Camper, Scarpa External Oblique Internal Oblique Transversus Abdominis Transversalis Fascia Parietal Peritoneum
What are the attachments of the linea alba?
Xiphoid process of the sternum to the pubic symphysis
Describe the structure of the rectus sheath
It is a fibrous layer of aponeuroses of the lateral abdominal muscles that surround the rectus abdominis in the midline
The aponeurosis of the internal oblique splits in to anterior and posterior aspects
The rectus sheath is reinforced anteriorly by the aponeurosis of the EO
The rectus sheath is reinforced posteriorly by the aponeurosis of the TA
At the Arcuate Line of Douglas, the aponeurosis only run anterior to the rectus muscle
How many tendinous intersections are found within each rectus abdominus muscle?
Three
What are the muscles of the posterior abdominal wall?
Psoas major
Psoas minor
Iliacus
What is the innervation to psoas major?
Anterior rami of L1 and L2
What is the innervation of iliacus?
Femoral nerve
What is the location of the arcuate line of Douglas?
Half way between the umbilicus and pubis symphysis
What is the innervation to the lateral muscles?
Anterior rami of T7-T12
Above the arcuate line, which structures form the anterior leaf of the rectus sheath?
Aponeurosis of the external and internal obilque
Above the arcuate line, which structures form the posterior leaf of the rectus sheath?
Aponeurosis of the internal oblique and transversus abdominus
Below the arcuate line, which structures form the anterior leaf of the rectus sheath?
Aponeurosis of external and internal oblique and transversus abdominus
Below the arcuate line, which structures form the posterior leaf of the rectus sheath?
None - there is no posterior leaf below the arcuate line
What is the nerve supply to the rectus abdominis?
Thoraco-abdominal nerves T7-T12
What is the nerve supply to the pyramidalis muscle?
Subcostal nerve
