Inguinal Flashcards
What are the 2 openings of the inguinal canal and in what layers are they located?
- Deep inguinal ring = transversalis fascia
- Superficial inguinal ring = external oblique aponeurosis
Where from and to do the contents of the inguinal canal run?
- From the abdominal wall
- To external genitalia
Contents of the inguinal canal
- Spermatic cord (male)
- Round ligament (female)
- Ilioinguinal nerve
- Genital branch of genitofemoral nerve
What does the ilioinguinal nerve provide?
Sensory innervation of genitalia
What does the genital branch of genitofemoral nerve do in males and females?
- M = supplies cremaster muscle and anterior scrotal skin
- F = supplies skin of mons pubis and labia majora
Types of inguinal hernia
- Direct
- Indirect
What is an indirect inguinal hernia and what causes it?
- Peritoneal sac (with or without bowel loops) enters canal through deep inguinal ring
- Enters lateral to epigastric vessels
- Caused by failure of processus vaginalis to regress
What is a direct inguinal hernia and what causes it?
- Peritoneal sac bulges into canal via posterior wall of canal
- Enters medial to epigastric vessels
- Caused by weakened abdominal musculature
What does the inguinal ligament run between?
- ASIS
- Pubic tubercle
What is the inguinal ligament made of?
Aponeurosis of external oblique
What is the inguinal ligament a site of attachment for?
- Internal oblique
- Transversus abdominis
What does the inguinal ligament protect?
Passing of structures between pelvis and thigh/external genitalia
