- Image

What influences come under people?
Family- take part in same sports as parents
Peers- go with friends or gain encouragement from friends your age
Role models- successful sports men and women who you admire may influence the sport you join
What influences come under image?
Fashion- you may need certain clothes like football boots that are expensive
Media- if it has positive media coverage you’re more likely to join
What influences come under cultural factors?
Disability- there may not be disabled facilities available locally for the sports you enjoy
Age- there may be age restrictions on some sports eg London marathon and it’s better to start young
Gender- idea that some sports are for girls or boys so boys may struggle to find a netball team
Race- ethnic background eg there could be racial abuse or less of your ethnic group in a sport
What influences come under resources?
Availability- there needs to be suitable facilities and resources available
Location- some places may not have any facilities locally available
Access- facilities need to be accessible eg by public transport
Time- facilities need to be available at the right time eg open during weekends and evenings
What influences come under health and well being?
Illness- if you are I’ll you can’t take part
Health problems- eg people who have asthma may be unable to take part in running activities
What influences come under socio-economic?
Cost- most activities charge for facility hire, lessons or equipment some may not be able to afford this
Status- persons current status in society eg unemployed, in education. Status can influence what sports a person like
Name four ways in which you can be involved in sport?
- Participating
- Teaching/coaching
- Officiating
- Volunteering
Name and explain one initiative to keep people involved?
Active kids programme- supermarkets run vouchers programmes so vouchers can be collected and given to a school to buy sporting equipment
Name and explain a second initiative to keep people involved?
School sport partnerships- based around a group of schools with a sports collage, aim is to offer a range of sports with high quality coaching and get competition within local community

The organisation Sport England- committed to creating opportunities for people Start Stay Succeed
Start- increase participation
Stay- retain people in sport
Succeed- Create opportunities for talented performers to achieve success
What is the sports participation pyramid?
Illustrates the development from foundation at the base to excellence/elite at the top
What is the foundation stage in the pyramid?
Most people are likely to be learning basic sporting skills this includes, primary pe lessons, top Play activities, multi sports sessions
What is the participation stage in the pyramid?
The stage where young people begin to participate regularly in a specific activity for enjoyment
Sports clubs are important at this stage
What is the performance stage in the pyramid?
During this stage people begin to concentrate on sport specific skills and develop talent in their sport
