Q

How do the press influence the voter?

A

During elections especially newspaper make it very clear which party they are rooting for and urge their readers to vote for. This form of pressure from the press can persuade people to flip their votes as if they keep on seeing negative headlines for one party they will not want to vote for them.

Q

How does Fake news affect politics?

A

the spreading of misinformation or ‘fake news’ is more widely available this can be seen with the recent anti-vax movement on twitter during Covid times. These pockets of misinformation can be brought on by being supported [liked, retweeted or commented on] by celebrities with millions of followers.

This can influence a person to follow a specific extreme group or follow an extreme belief just because their favourite celebrity endorses it. A recent example of the harm of Twitter was Donald Trump on the January 6th Capitol riots.

Q

What does UK law require broadcast media to do?

A

The news is watched by millions everyday in the UK, this type of reporting is different to that of newspaper as the law requires TV news to be fair and balanced, meaning that companies are expected to report facts and to be balanced in their analysis.

Q

Example of Broadcast media being right wing?

A

This doesn’t stop their being news stations that have political agendas for example GB news, this ‘anti-woke’ news station is right-wing and reports a lot of news about climate change not being as bad as we think and the problem of immigrants crossing the channel, they have Nigel Farage [former head of UKIP] as one of the presenters going to show how right wing of a news channel they are.

Q

Are political debates effective?

A

Post-debate analysis has suggested that most people who watched the debates had already made up their minds and were not influenced by what they heard.

This meant that although one party leader or another may have appeared to have ‘won’ the debate, overall the debates had little impact on the election result.
