First wave = 1850s to 1940s

What is first wave feminism?
Concentrated on removing formal forms of inequality, such as unequal voting rights
What is second wave feminism?
Recognised that the removal of legal and political inequalities had not removed other forms of injustice and unfair treatment of women, so attempted to politicise women’s personal lives as well.
What is third wave feminism?
Concerned with the experiences of different groups of women, recognising that traditionally feminism has tended to reflect the concerns and interests of middle class women more then any other lower class.

Believe and recognise the significance of sex differences
Argues that gender differences are artificial in human nature (Related to Otherness)
Extends the Classical Liberal idea of Self-interest to Include Women

They believe that reformist democratic pressure can eliminate inequality through laws and rights

Solution to the patriarchy lies with reform in the Legal, Political and Cultural sphere

Legal Equality & Property Ownership will naturally follow from Political Equality
Hold the Belief that legislation and reform will create equality within the economy

Female gender roles are a result of capitalism and bourgeoisie
What do socialist feminists think about the state?
The state enforces and promotes capitalism, with the state being described as ‘a servant of capitalism’.
What do socialist feminists think about society?
Patriarchy, a result of capitalism, oppresses women as low-paid labour. Society is economically driven
What do socialist feminists think about the economy?
Capitalism oppresses the workers, and women in particular, and is the driving force behind all inequality. Capitalism must be destroyed as a precondition for women’s liberation
What do radical feminists think about the state?
They see the developments made by recent waves of feminism as superficial as such reforms do not address the more fundamental problems of the systematic nature of discrimination, exploitation and inequality. These are deep rooted problems that the state has failed to combat correctly
What do radical feminists think about society?
For many radical feminist, the patriarchy more than capitalism is the key characteristic of modern society and its women who are the exploited people in society rather then the working class.
What do radical feminists think about the economy?
Similar to socialist feminism but the economy isn’t as important.

Women have multiple identities from birth: can be both a caregiver and a CEO
From birth they experience multiple forms of oppression

White Men dominate the State

Women of different ethnicities and socioeconomic classes have been neglected by mainstream feminism
