Inflammation Flashcards
What is acute inflammation?
fight against early stages of infection, preps body for repair
What is chronic inflammation?
dominating presence of macrophages in damaged tissue
what are the hallmark signs of inflammation?
heat, swelling, redness, pain, loss of function
Describe how inflammation occurs
injury> vasodilation> large volume of blood to the area> fluid accumulation> leukocytes adhere to injured area> phagocytosis of invaders> healing
What are the mediators of inflammation?
pro-inflammatory cytokines complement prostaglandins leukotrienes vasoactive amines (histamine, serotonin) platelet activating factor plasma proteases
What are the two important stages of inflammation?
vascular
cellular
describe the vascular stage of inflammation:
vasoconstriction (short) vasodilation (sustained) passive vasodilation (vessels become "leaky")
describe the cellular stage of inflammation:
movement of leukocytes into the damaged area through the leaky vessels
What are the steps of leukocytes migration into damaged tissue?
chemotaxis
rolling
migration
phagocytosis
What allows leukocytes to migrate to an area of injury?
CAM (cell adhesion molecules)
What is extravasation?
movement of leukocytes out of vessels and into damaged tissue
