Inflammation 3 Flashcards
What is infarction?
cell death after loss of oxygen
Why does an hypoxic cell cause acute inflammation?
cause no oxygen means no ATP which means build up of calcium in cell which stimulates bad things
How long in myocardium infarction before cells are going to die anyway?
20 mins
What happens to cells that die hypoxically?
necrosis
What are the first sign the cells are going to die?
shrink and become red
What is the purpose of neutrophils?
phagocytic properties, produce cytokines, associated with acute inflammation
What is coagulative necrosis?
cell death with some structures of cells left as ghost outlines before complete phagocytosis
As neutrophils fade away what happens?
replaced by macrophages
Is there suppuration in chronic inflammation?
no
What does restitution produce?
scarring
When macrophages fade away what are they replaced by?
fibroblast
What do fibroblasts do?
gradually lay down collagen
How long does laying down collagen take to finish?
6 weeks
Why is scarring on heart so bad?
means that muscle tissue is replaced by scar tissue and can’t pump as well
