Inflammation Flashcards
when does inflammation occur? (2)
when microbes are introduced into normally sterile body sites, or when tissues are damaged
what are the four cardinal signs of inflammation? what would the fifth one be?
swelling
redness
heat
pain
(loss of function)
what causes swelling?
accumulation of exudate in tissues.
what causes redness?
dilation –> increased blood flow –> heat
what causes heat?
dilation –> increased blood flow –> heat
what causes pain?
accumulation of exudate in tissues.
also bradykinin secreting prostaglandin which fires nerve endings.
what can go wrong in inflammation?
sometimes enzymes and toxic products contained within phagocytic cells are inevitably released
what are the first phagocytes recruited to the site of infection?
neutrophils
