Q

What is the lingual nerve?

A

The lingual nerve is a sensory branch of the mandibular trigeminal nerve (V3) which provides general sensory innervation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue (taste)

Q

What is the chorda tympani?

A

A branch of the facial nerve that communicates taste from the tongue to the brain. It joins the facial nerve in the facial canal.

Q

What is the pterygopalatine ganglion?

A

The pterygopalatine ganglion is ganglion located in the pterygopalatine fossa. The nerve of the pterygo canal (deep petrosal nerve and greater petrosal nerve) reaches the ganglion through the pterygoid canal.

Sensory information from the pharynx, orital cavity, nasal cavity and oral cavity is carried into the ganglion and back to the brain as V2 (maxillary nerve)

16
Q

What limits the temporal fossa medially?

A

Temporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid bone.

17
Q

What limits the temporal fossa anteriorly?

A

The temporal surface of zygomatic bone.

18
Q

What foramina are found in the temporal fossa?

A

Zygomaticotemporal foramen

Zygomaticofacial foramen

19
Q

Where is the superficial temporal artery?

A

It arises from the external carotid artery when it splits into the superficial temporal artery and the maxillary artery.

20
Q

What limits the retromandibular fossa?

A
Styloid process (medially)
Mandibular ramus (anteriorly)
Mastoid process (posteriorly)
