Inferior Fossas of the Skull Flashcards
What is the lateral limitation of the infratemporal fossa?
Ramus of the mandible and the zygomatic arch
What is the medial limitation of the infratemporal fossa?
Lateral plate of pterygoid
What is the anterior limitation of the infratemporal fossa?
Posterior wall of the maxillary sinus.
Posterior surface of zygomatic arch
What is the posterior limitation of the infratemporal fossa?
Articular tubercle
What is the superior limitation of the infratemporal fossa?
Temporal surface of sphenoid bone
What foramens are found in the infratemporal fossa?
Inferior orbital fissure Sphenopalatine foramen Foramen ovale Foramen spinosum Mandibular foramen
What goes into the mylohyoid line of the mandible?
Motor fibers of V3.
What goes into the mandibular foramen?
The sensory part of V3.
What fossa does the sphenopalatine foramen communicate with?
Infratemporal fossa –> Pterygopalatine fossa
What is the lingual nerve?
The lingual nerve is a sensory branch of the mandibular trigeminal nerve (V3) which provides general sensory innervation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue (taste)
What is the chorda tympani?
A branch of the facial nerve that communicates taste from the tongue to the brain. It joins the facial nerve in the facial canal.
What foramen are found in the pterygopalatine fossa?
- Inferior orbital fissure
- Foramen rotundum
- Pterygoid canal
- Greater palatine foramen
- Lesser palatine foramen
- Pterygomaxillary fissure
What is the pterygopalatine ganglion?
The pterygopalatine ganglion is ganglion located in the pterygopalatine fossa. The nerve of the pterygo canal (deep petrosal nerve and greater petrosal nerve) reaches the ganglion through the pterygoid canal.
Sensory information from the pharynx, orital cavity, nasal cavity and oral cavity is carried into the ganglion and back to the brain as V2 (maxillary nerve)
Where do you find the maxillary artery and vein?
The pterygopalatine fossa.
What limits the temporal fossa laterally?
The zygomatic arch
