Infection Flashcards
Bacteria
Single cell organisms that do not require living tissues to survive
Gram positive bacteria
Affected by penicillin Produce exotoxins Retain crystal violet Thick layer of peptidoglycan No outer membrane layer
Gram negative bacteria
Produce endotoxins Can lead to endotoxic shock Do not retain crystal violet Thin layer of peptidoglycan Outer membrane layer
Spores
Inactive form of bacteria
Viruses
Small intracellular parasites that can’t live without a host
Can mutate quickly
Take over host cells and synthesize the virus for replication
Can viruses be targeted by medications?
No
Fungi
Eukaryotic organisms
Only few cause infections
Protozoa
Eukaryotic and lack of cell wall
Pathogenic forms are usually parasitic
Droplet Transmission
Respiratory or salivary secretions expelled from infected person (TB)
Aerosol Transmission
Small particles from respiratory tract suspend in air and can travel farther than droplets
Vector-borne Transmission
Insect or animal is intimidated host
Nosocomial Infection
Infection while in a health care facility
Inflammation Symptoms
Pain Swelling Redness Warmth Fever Fatigue HA Nausea Weakness
Bacterial Infection
Purulent exudate
Leukocytosis (inc in WBC’s)
Viral Infection
Serous, clear exudate
Leukopenia (dec in WBC’s)
