Induction Flashcards
What are the different methods of induction?
- Injectable agents
- Induction chamber/ mask
- Immersion/ contact (gills/ skin)
What makes the ideal injectable?
- Water soluble
- Long shelf life
- Stable when exposed to light
- Safe therapeutic ratio
- No histamine release
- Small volume required
What component of propofol supports bacterial growth?
Egg lethicin
Why does proppofol allow a rapid, smooth emergence?
-Becuase of redistribution, it moves away from the vein as it has a large Vd
What are the probleems with propofol?
- Rigidity/ twitching
- Apnoea
- Care with hypoproteinuria
- Heinz body anaemia in cats
Which induction agent rapidly crosses the BBB?
Thiopentone sodium
How can you avoid apnoea with induction agents?
GIVE SLOWLY
Which induction combination should be avoided in patients with GI obstruction?
Ketamine and A2
In equine anaethesias, what could you combine with ket for induction?
- A2
- ACP
- BZDs
- Guafinesin
(would probs choose Ket +A2)
How are ruminants intubated?
- Small can be visualised, larger ruminants done by palpation
- MUST tube quickly so rumen fluid doesn’t leak and go down trachea
- Use cuffed tubes
What induction drugs can you use on pigs?
- Ketamine
- Alfaxalone
- Propofol
Why are pigs difficult to intubate?
Very narrow larynx which is S shaped
Describe how blood shunting affects anaesthesia of reptiles
- Can shunt blood in the heart to avoid it going to the lungs (gases won’t work)
- Can either divert to or bypass the kidneys. Means HL injections don’t work
What agent can you use to intubate fish/ amphibians?
MS-222
