Breathing systems Flashcards
What is the function of a breathing system?
- To supply oxygen
- To supply anaesthetic agent
- To remove CO2
What are the two types of breathing system?
Rebreathing Non rebreathing (soda lime)
List the different types of non
breathing circuit
- Magill (CF 1) (No V) (+10kg)
- Lack (CF 1) (2-10kg)
- Bain (CF 2.5) (Y V) (7-20kg)
- T piece (CF 2.5) (Y V) (-10kg)
- Circuit
How do you calculate flow rate?
CF x Weight x MV (0.25)
What are the different types of rebreathing system?
- To and fro
- Circle
What are the problems with to and fro?
- Dust inhalation
- Dead space increases with time
Describe the benefits of the circle system
- Warms/ humidifies air
- Less pollutant
- Good for IPPV
How do rebreathing systems work?
- CO2 absorbed with calcium hydroxide
- Indicator to show when needs replacing
- VALVES prevent backflow and must be checked prior to use
What must the volume of the breathing bag be?
Grater than the patient’s inspiratory capacity (30ml/kg)
What is the general FGF rate for dogs? (circle)
- Start at 2-3
- 500ml to 1L/min for maintenance
What is the general FGF rate for horses? (circle)
8-10L/ min then 4-5L/min
How do you change the FGF rate? (circle)
- Start at high FGF rate and vapouriser % for first 10 mins of surgery
- Reduce once anaesthesia plane is stable
- At end switch FGF up and decrease vapouriser % to help recovery
What are the advantages of the Humphrey ADE circle system?
- Combination system
- Compact and easy to clean
- Versatile
- Good for IPPV
- Can do both rebreathing and non rebreathing
What are the benefits of the AMBU bag?
Essential during resuscitation
-Allows you to give patient breaths using room air or oxygen
What is baro trauma?
Cause by putting a patient onto a circuit with a closed valve. Means pressure builds up in thorax as it cannot escape.
