Individual differences explanation for schizophrenia Flashcards
Fixation on oral stage
In the psychodynamic approach for teachers that fixation is where there’s a focus on a particular psychosexual stage, dis leads to fixation on the appropriate area of the body related to that stage. For example ages 0 to 80 months a child libido is focused on their mouth behaviours surrounding this is breastfeeding chewing toys and teething this therefore can be carried on into adult personalities leading to now biting kissing smoking and chewing gum.
Regression to oral stage
therefore, fraud would argue that schizophrenic have regressed back to the oral stage. Regression is a type of ego defence mechanism when an individual comes in contact with stress or disturbing force or anxiety. They may regress back to an early stage of development rather than with their issues in an adult way. The anxiety provoking thoughts temporarily pushed into the unconscious ( imagine for an example an adult who sucks their someone stressed). Therefore someone who is fixed a particular psychosexual stage may regress back to that stage as an adult in response to stress. Therefore because an individual has regressed back to the mind of an infant where their mind is controlled only by the aid it would lead to self centred behaviour where the ego has no control over the edge as it had theoretically developed therefore the individual would be focused on their own gratification of care for others. This links was schizophrenia as the lack of ego would also make it harder for someone to engage in reality leading to Delusions and hallucinations and an overactive and ego can lead to negative symptoms such as delusions of grandiosity.
Schizophrenogenic mothers
From a research and name Reichman, he suggested that schizophrenia could be caused by mothers who were overly dominant in the home and dominant particularly towards this schizophrenic child. The characteristics of a schizophrenogenic mother Coldness overprotectiveness rigidness and sensitivity. however while being controlling and overprotective yet cold and distant the overprotection can stifle the child development and their distance leaves the child feeling emotionally insecure. This can lead to the development of distrust that can eventually develop into delusions and paranoia symptoms of schizophrenia.
Alternative individual differences explanation
And alternative individual differences explanation for schizophrenia is the cognitive approach. In this Shiz that maladaptive thinking may be a cause of schizophrenia. For example a research propose that maladaptive thinking could offer an explanation as to why individual would suffer with auditory hallucinations which are key aspect of schizophrenia, in the research propose that triggers such as sleep deprivation can cause some individuals to hear voices in maladaptive ways.
The individuals praise these voices inappropriately as something belonging to the devil for example therefore causing them to think maladaptive, feeding into schizophrenia
