Evaluation Of CBTp Flashcards

1
Q

Effectiveness

A

One strength of CBT as a method of modifying schizophrenic behaviour is that there is research to support the effectiveness of CBT. For example, research found that 60 individuals with schizophrenia who each had positive and distressing symptoms that were medication resistant were randomly allocated to either a CBT plus standard care condition or standard care only condition. After nine months it was found that there was a change in the psychotic symptoms experience in the CBT group 50% improved. This is an overall strength as CBT may be more effective at modifying schizophrenic behaviour and helping treat patients in comparison to other standard care only procedures

Q

Issue with long-term effect CBT

A

One limitation is that the effectiveness of CBT at treating schizophrenia is questionable due to a lack of significant results shown in long-term effectiveness. For instance studies found the individuals who either receive CBT shortly after diagnosis or receives standard care 18 months later that the CBT group had the same relapse rates as clients who had standard care this suggest that the effectiveness of CBT is short-lived this is a limitation as it shows CBT cannot be used fully in helping schizophrenics with their symptoms

Q

Ethical issues

A

Another limitation to CBT as a method of modifying behaviour is that CBT tells patients what they think is wrong, this is patient blame. This is unethical as putting pressure and blame on patients may cause with symptoms then they had to start with furthermore and another issue that can arise from CBT is this possible psychiatric prejudice. for example psychiatrics may judge that the person isn’t suitable for CBT without giving them a chance. This is an overall limitation
