Will resolving land claims between the Indigenous people & government solve all the disputes between them?
-Unlikely to solve all disputes, as unresolved and claims are only one issue which Indigenous people face
-Resolving claims only treats the symptoms of colonization
-Instead, we should should collectively acknowledge the effects of colonialism, & remove our prejudices of Indigenous people
-Mi’kmaq lobster fishing dispute shows how issues over land management can arise, even when Indigenous people gain a treaty right to fish
Should alternative sentencing be used?
- I think it should be used
- One study from the Correctional Services of Canada found that Indigenous offenders who participated in restorative justice programs had lower rates of recidivism than those who did not.
- Alternative sentencing reduces the need for traditional correctional facilities
- Provides more personalized support for offenders
Is the government being efficient when it comes to addressing land claims?
- Slow & inconsistent responses
- Many Indigenous people have had to wait long periods of time in order for their land claims to be acknowledged & addressed
- This has caused numerous issues regarding land management
- The government has taken some steps to address land claims, such as creating the Specific Claims tribunal.
- Needs more work when it comes to addressing land claims
How will self-governance benefit Indigenous people?
- Self-governance provides Indigenous people with freedom & power to manage their issues
- Issues include land management, resource consumption
- Gives them the ability to create their unique systems of government which will allow them to adequately express their culture
How will the self-governance of Indigenous people benefit Canadians?
- Facilitates empathy, respect, & cooperation between Indigenous & non-Indigenous parties
- Acknowledging Indigenous people’s right to self-governance will foster a society of justice & equity between its people
What will self-governance for Indigenous people require?
- A big shift in power & authority from the gov to the Indigenous people
- A majority of people to thoroughly acknowledge the effects of colonialism, as well as discrimination of Indigenous people
