Who are the four main figures which the Executive Branch is comprised of?
The Sovereign, the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet
The Prime Minister can be described as four things. What are they?
The PM is the head of government, the national leader, a party leader, & a member of parliament.
What is the PM’s job as the head of government?
Appoint judges & senators, call elections at least every four years, & choose Cabinet Ministers
What is the PM’s job as the national leader?
Speak to the nation, represent Canada in other countries, & work with Premiers
What is the PM’s job as a party leader?
Assign jobs to people in the party, lead the party caucus
What is a caucus?
A meeting between the MP’s of a political party
What is the PM’s job as an MP?
Represent the people of their riding
Cabinet ministers are decided by who?
The Prime Minister
What do members of the Cabinet do?
Each member leads a government department & advises the PM
What is the Department of Finance responsible for?
It is responsible for creating a budget for the government, deciding how much each department gets to spend, & deciding how high the taxes will be.
Name five departments of government.
Agriculture, National Defense, Education, Transportation, Health
What are five ways that the Cabinet can be described?
-Mix of men & women
-Mix of people from different ethnic & lingual background
-Mix of MP’s from different provinces & regions
-Should be comprised of experienced MP’s
-MP’s should have a background connected to their department
