Indices & Screening M14 Flashcards
What is Screening?
The process of examining a large proportion of the population to determine the outcome.
What is Incidence?
The occurrence - number of people showing signs of e.g. caries
What are Surveys?
To take a general look at something / scanning the condition of something.
What is Prevalence?
Where it is, how many people, how often etc.
What is Epidemiology?
The Study of the indigence and distribution in a large population.
Given an example of an epidemiology study.
Yearly, national study of 5 year old dental examination to determine dfmt / DFMT
What percentage of school children are reported to have caries?
60-90%
When completing a type of plaque indices, what tooth number system is used?
FDI - World Dental Federation Notation.
Name the three types of plaque indices?
BPE, Teeth Cleanliness index & Silness and Loe Plaque Index
What is BPE and how is it measured?
Basic Periodontal Exam - 6 quadrants, period probe, extends 3.5mm-5.5mm, placed in gingival crevice.
What teeth are used in the teeth cleanliness index?
- Buccal surfaces
- 46 - Lingual surfaces
- Labial surface
What is 10/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
Tooth Surface Clean
What is 8/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
Small deposits at gingival margin
What is 6/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
Plaque 1mm wide at margin
What is 4/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
up to 1/3 tooth covered with plaque
What is 2/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
up to 2/3 tooth covered in plaque
What is 0/10 score for teeth cleanliness index?
more than 2/3 covered in plaque
What is the Silness and Loe Plaque Index?
The measurement of oral hygiene based on the soft debris and mineralised deposits . Each surface on the tooth is given a score 0-3.
How is Silness and Loe score worked out?
The scores for each surface of the tooth are added and then divided by 4.
In silliness and Loe, what does a score of 0 mean?
No plaque
In silliness and Loe, what does a score of 1 mean?
A film of plaque. Maybe seen after disclosing tablets.
In silliness and Loe, what does a score of 2 mean?
Moderate accumulation of soft deposits. Seen by the naked eye.
In silliness and Loe, what does a score of 3 mean?
Abundance of soft matter, within the pocket and/or tooth margin.
How often does the BASCD conduct an epidemiology survey? What do they do?
Annually. Studies 5, 12 & 14 year olds, results are given by decayed, missing and filled teeth.
