What is workplace diversity?
Diversity in the workplace relates to the acceptance and inclusion of employees of all backgrounds.
Ensuring diversity in the workplace is an important asset of an organisation as it acknowledges the individual strengths of each employee and the potential they bring.
What are some advantages of a diverse team?
Increased productivity: a diversity of talent will result in a broader range of skills amongst the team and result in increased productivity.
Increased creativity: differing skill sets and perspectives within the team will increase the change of generating solutions to workplace problems.
Improved cultural awareness: dealing with foreign clients and team member can speak the language.
Positive reputation: Perceived as a better employers, who treats all backgrounds fairly.
Explain your understanding of inclusin within the workplace?
Inclusion within the workplace i creating an environment and culture where all company employees feel like they belong in the organisation.
The result in every employee being comfortable to voice their opinions and that no one person feels excluded on the basis of their identity.
What is meant by the term unconscious bias?
Unconscious bias refers to the associations and assumptions that a person may have about someone solely because of their, race, gender or disability.
These judgements are made without conscious awareness.
These automatic assumptions and stereotypes are a major contributor to a lack of workplace diversity.
What is the Equalities Act 2010?
Law that covers everyone in Britain that protects people from discrimination, victimisation & harrassment.
What is discrimination?
The unfair treatment of certain groups of people based on their characteristics.
What is victimisation?
When someone becomes a victim of unfair treatment after complaining or intending to for discrimination
What is harrassment?
Unwanted behaviour which is offensive or makes you feel intimidated, it can be verbal, written or visual.
What is Diversity?
Involving people from a range of different backgrounds and recognising the positives that the differences can bring.
What is inclusion?
Where everyone is treated fairly & respectfully, given equal opportunities within the workplace and feel welcomed & comfortable.
Why is diversity important?
People from a range of backgrounds can bring different areas of knowledge that can help achieved difficult tasks and can increase work productivity.
What are protected characteristics?
Characteristics that are protected by law that yoy cannot discriminate agaisnt: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage status, race, sex, religion or belief
What is victimisation?
When someone becomes a victim of unfair treatment after complaining or intending to for discrimination
What is unconcious bias & different types?
Social stereotypes & quick judgements made outside of someones concious awareness, ageism, gender bias, affinity bias (gravitate to similar people) and beauty bias.
