improving the accuracy of eye witness testimony Flashcards
cognitive interview
a method of interviewing eye witnesses which aims to help them provide more accurate eye witness testimony.
who developed CI?
FISHER AND GEISLEMAN
Four techniques of cognitive interview
- context reinstatement
- report everything
- changing the perspective
- reverse the order.
context reinstatement
mentally returning to the scene of the crime including physical environment and mental state. this is based on cue dependant forgetting.
report everything
all details even if they seem irrevelant should be mentioned triggering memories.
change the perspective
mentally recreate how the crime would be recalled from perspective of other witness. holistic view of event to minimise bias and reduce schema.
reverse the order
switch to different chronology or timelines . for example from the end to beginning or from middle to start.
research
fisher , geiselman and amador used a field study to compare 7 detectives trained with CI and 9 detectives from standard interview. resukts showed that the ci trained detectives received 47% more information in real interviews after their training and 63% more information than the untrained detectives which suggests that cognitive interview is more effective.
another research
in a meta analysis of 53 studies they fiund that the cognitive interview generated an avg 34% more correct information than standard interviewing techniques. it is positive as it supports the view that CI can increase EWT.
evaluation
one problem is that it can be time consuming and requiring more significant training and invetsment.
