improving adherence of exercise Flashcards

1
Q

strategies for improving adherence in exercise- beheaviour modification approach

A

planned, systematic application of learning principles to the modification of behaviour

  • behaviour modification approaches produced positive results
  • associated with a 10% and 25% increase in the frequency of PE when compared with control groups- Buckworth and Dishman 2007

Q

increase adherence for PE= prompts- behaviour modification

A
  • a cue that initiates a behaviour
  • can be a GOAL- increase cues for the desired behaviour and decrease cues for competing behaviours

Effects of a health sign on stair use- Auweele et al 2005- baseline 69% compared to with intervention of health sign= 77%. Then intervention of an email promoting the health effects went up further to 85%. Removal of prompt declined back to around 67%

Q

INCREASING ADHERENCE FOR PE- contracting

A
  • ppts enter into a contract with the exercise practitioner

-contracts should include realistic goals, dates by which goals should be reached, consequences for not meeting goals (Wills and Campbell 1992)
research shows people who sign have better attendance

Q

increasing adherence for PE- Reinforcement approaches

A
  • charting attending and participation
  • also use self monitoring

personal diary and enhancing adherence (Arrigo et al 2008)- 73% cardiac rehab ppts remained active for a year compared to 40% in control who did not keep a diary

-feedback- Brickwood et al 2019- review effects of interventions utilizing consumer- based wearable activity trackers on physical activity participation and sedentary behaviour.
the more the individual feedback is the more likely it is to succeed.

however tracking such as wearing trackable devices= maladaptive behaviours

Q

increasing adherence in PE- cognitive behavioural approaches

A

goal setting- Martin and Colleagues 1984- exercise goals most often reported increasing cardio fitness (28%), toning strengthen muscles (18%), losing weight (13%)
