painting outside, outside the studio, capturing a moment in time and how it feels, more abstract form than literal form
Edouard Manet
- Manet originally inspired by the italian renaisance
- Manet then discovers Ukiyo-e prints and is very inspired
- impressionist artist were very influenced by Ukiyo-e subject matter, and also the way the prints were composed
Claude Monet
- Monet water lily paintings were quite small - they are very restful and calming
- Monet is very interested in how light changes colour
- Manet and Monet and Renoir were good friends, and would paint eachother. - Impressionist paintings were incredibly unpopular when it came out
Mary Cassatt
(from the US, moved to france)
become friends with impressionist painters
influenced by Uykio-e prints (style, colour pallet, flat areas of shape no gradients, contour line, elements of pattern)
focused her art on the private lives of woman
she becomes inspired by impressionism later on and paints very much like monet and manet
Vincent van Gogh
(dutch artist, died at 37) very religious, wanted to be a clergy
very troubled individual, very destitute and broke, dealt with mental illness anxiety and acute depression
stated painting when he was in his 20’s
moved to paris for art
Post Impressionists
started painting quite realistically
influenced by Uykio-e
- directly taking images from artists without knowing the culture, appropriation
then moved into a more impressionist style, but more resolved
- can see the brushwork but has been worked much more, painted indoors
moves away from Uykio-e and starts painting the landscape around him
we know a lot about van gogh because of the letters he would write to his brother theo
died in 1890, thought to have shot himself in the chest, we arent sure where he was when he shot himself, didnt die when he shot himself. became septic in the hospital and died due to infection. speculated last words: “the sadness will last forever”
