Sheep symbolism
when there are 12 of them. They represent christ’s disciples/apocoles, followers of christ. Faithful followers. Christ is the shepherd of his flock (of sheep.) Christ can be symbolized by one single lamb.
San Vitalae: Emperor Justinian (the great)
- highly celebrated emperor
- very well liked/loved because he listened to the people and he wanted to make the roman empiorer flourish
- didn’t surround himself with airs because of their family, but because they were brilliant (his advisors)
- believed in the arts, patron of the religion - built colosseums, basilica (hadia sophia byzantine basilica constructed in 537 C.E.)
- was converted to a mosque at one point (in mosques you wont see depiction of human and animal forms, but lots of flora and geometric shapes) but they did keep so iconography from the byznantene era - a time of wealth for the people
- around 540 C.E. plague hit and started the collapse of the byzantine era - symbol on his shield is chiro symbol (XP) x= chi p=ro (translates to christ) used originally by greek (pagan) scribed in the margins of books to indicate ‘good section’
San Vitalae - Emporesis Theodora
- Justinian’s uncle made a dicre that you could marry outside social class.
- Justinian then married Theodora
- loved by the people
- very important and influencial woman from the byzentine empiorer
- father was a bear trainer
- mother was a dance and actress (prostitute)
- scandal when they married (theodora also was a prostitute like her mother, aleda and the swan)
- she was a co-region of the byzantine empire - their mosaics are equal and directly across from each other in the basilica (san vitalae)
