Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
This act was enacted to prevent adulterated or misbranded meat & meat products from being sold as food and to ensure that meats are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions
Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906
This act requires new drugs to be shown as safe before marketing
A set of US laws that authorize the FDA to oversee and regulate the production, sale & distribution of food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics
*Its introduction was largely influenced by a mass poisoning event in which an untested antioxidant containing a toxin and led to over 100 deaths across 15 states

Poultry Products Inspection Act of 1957
This act requires manufacturers of new food additives to establish safety
Food Additive Act of 1958
This act defined “color additive” and required that only color additives listed as “suitable and safe” for a given use could be used in foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices
*In fall 1950, many children became ill from eating an orange Halloween candy containing 1-2% FD&C Orange No. 1, an approved color additive
Color Additive Act Amendment Act of 1960
This act directs the federal trade commission and the FDA to issue regulations requiring that all “consumer commodities” be labeled to disclose net contents, identity of commodity, and name & place of business of the product’s manufacturer, packer, or distributor
Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1966
This act set requirements to ensure that eggs and egg products are wholesome, not adulterated, and properly labeled and packaged
Egg Products Inspection Act of 1970
This act amends the FD&C act to deem a food misbranded unless its label bears nutrition information that provides (1) serving size (2) # of servings (3) # of calories per serving (4) the amount of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbs, complex carbs, sugars, total protein & dietary fiber per serving (5) subject to conditions, vitamins, minerals or other nutrients
Nutrition Labeling Act and Education Act of 1990
Under this act, manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded
FDA has the authority to take action against any adulterated or misbranded dietary supplement product after it reaches the market
Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994
Saccharin was under investigation by the FDA due to studies that indicated a link between saccharin consumption and bladder cancer in rats. As a result, the FDA removed it from GRAS list of food additives, and proposed a ban. The public outcry following this proposal led to the FDA putting a hold on the ban until further research was done. For years, food & beverages containing Saccharin were required to have a warning label/ This act eliminated this requirement
Saccharin Notice Repeal Act of 1996
This act directs the secretary of agriculture to establish and maintain a list of each biological agent and each toxin that the secretary determines has the potential to pose a severe threat to animal or plant health, or to animal or plant products
The Bioterrorism Act of 2002
This act directs the secretary of agriculture to collect pesticide residue data on commodities most frequently consumed by infants and children
*The AMS pesticide data program (PDP) provides pesticide data to support this requirement
