Impact Of Physical Activity On Health Flashcards
What is atherosclerosis?
When arteries harden and narrow due to becoming clogged up by fatty acids
What is atheroma?
A fatty deposit found in the inner lining of an artery
If this breaks off it can cause a blockage which can cut off the supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle, resulting in a heart attack
What is angina?
Chest pain that occurs when the blood supply through the coronary arteries to the muscles of the heart is restricted
What is LDL cholesterol?
Low density lipoproteins that take cholesterol to tissues, so increase CHD
Classed as bad cholesterol
What is HDL cholesterol?
High density lipoproteins that take cholesterol to the liver to be broken down, so reduce risk of CHD
Classed as good cholesterol
How does exercise affect HDL and LDL?
Exercise lowers LDL and increases HDL
What is a stroke?
When the blood supply to the brain is cut off
What are the two types of stroke?
Ischaemic
Haemorrhage
What is an Ischaemic stroke?
When a clot stops blood supply
What is a Haemorrhage stroke?
When a weakened blood vessel supplying the brain bursts
How can exercise lower risk of stroke?
Lowers blood pressure
How does exercise help the health of the heart?
Stronger heart- so higher stroke volume
Maintains flexibility of vessels- so good blood flow means normal blood pressure and low cholesterol
