Impact of Industrialisation 1894-1914 Flashcards
Nobility
1861= owned 80% land 1905= 40% land
1/3 noble land handed to peasants = some struggled to make ends meet
nobles protected as there was no redistributive taxation on nobility to reduce their income or harm their traditional ways of life
Tsar encouraged noble influence to keep the Z power retained
he regularly appointed provisional governorships
1882- 700 nobles owned their own business
this demonstrates their ability to adapt to industrialisation
May 1906 = united nobility assembled
Changes to the Nobility
overall, not much change as nobles retained their wealth, power + influence so weren’t affected by industrialisation
formation of united nobility reflects the strength + determination of the class
Middle Class
biz + prof men able to carve comfortable lives
social mobility –> nobles sons choose to join the biz world
the class grew as a force of management + prof = high demand in an increasingly complex industrializing society
1914 - 1mil professionals + 2,000 successful entrepreneurs
increase in education + demand for more administration fuelled growing MC
their natural home was in the Z + duma , they exerted influence beyond their size
Changes to Middle Class
industrialisation had a massive impact on MC as it led to their growth + increased influence
Workers
pop growth + economic dev mostly affected workers + peasants
urban areas where former peasants were isolated from their roots meant that they gradually lost their identity
they become easy targets for political agitators + began associating with radical groups
the large discontent of WC led to the Tsarist regime being overthrown in 1917
Peasants
the slow process of awakening the peasantry from their inertia to political activism was underway by 1914
