1861= owned 80% land 1905= 40% land
1/3 noble land handed to peasants = some struggled to make ends meet
nobles protected as there was no redistributive taxation on nobility to reduce their income or harm their traditional ways of life

Tsar encouraged noble influence to keep the Z power retained
he regularly appointed provisional governorships

1882- 700 nobles owned their own business
this demonstrates their ability to adapt to industrialisation

A

biz + prof men able to carve comfortable lives
social mobility –> nobles sons choose to join the biz world

the class grew as a force of management + prof = high demand in an increasingly complex industrializing society
1914 - 1mil professionals + 2,000 successful entrepreneurs

increase in education + demand for more administration fuelled growing MC

their natural home was in the Z + duma , they exerted influence beyond their size

A

pop growth + economic dev mostly affected workers + peasants

urban areas where former peasants were isolated from their roots meant that they gradually lost their identity
they become easy targets for political agitators + began associating with radical groups

the large discontent of WC led to the Tsarist regime being overthrown in 1917
