Immunizations Flashcards
What ages do you receive the Hep B vaccine?
0, 2, 6 months
First dose is before hospital discharge
What should be done in infants who are born to a hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) positive mother?
Administer both the Hep B vaccine and 0.5 mL of hep B immune globulin (HBIG) within 12 hours of birth
Test for HBsAg and antibody to HBsAg after 3 doses of Hep B (age 9-18 months)
If the mom’s status is unknown: check status immediately, give Hep B within 12 hours after birth, if mom tests positive, given HBIG within 1 week of age
What is the usual volume for all vaccines?
0.5 ml given IM or SQ, except influenza vaccine is .25 mL IM for children 6-35 months and .5 mL IM for children greater than 3 years
Do not administer the Rotavirus vaccine after _____ weeks. Why?
32 weeks because infants are most at risk and after 32 weeks vaccine associated risks increase
How many doses are in the rotavirus series and how often are they given?
Series of 3, starting at 6 weeks to 32 weeks
First dose should be given between 6 weeks and 14 weeks (so likely at 2 month visit) and each dose is given at 4 week intervals
When is the DTaP vaccine given?
2, 4, and 6 months with boosters at 15 months and 6 years
DTaP is not indicated for children ______ years and older.
7 years
When is the Tdap vaccine given?
11 or 12 years old with subsequent boosters given every 10 years
When is the Hib conjugate vaccine given?
2, 4, and 6 months with a booster at 12 months
** First dose can be given as early as 6 weeks
Hib is not recommended for children _____ years and older.
5 years
When is the Prevnar vaccine (PCV13) given and what does it protect against?
Given at 2, 4, 6 months old and 1 booster at 12 months
Protects against streptococcus pneumonia
When should the 23PS (Pneumovax) vaccine be given and who should it be given to?
23 PS should be given to children between the ages of 24-59 months who received all PCV13 doses and are immunocompromised.
Also consider in Native American, African American, or Alaskan descent or in those attending day care.
When should the Polio vaccine (IPV–injectable polio vaccine) be given?
2, 4, 6 months and 6 years
**Oral polio vaccine is discouraged and only possible for dose number 3 and 4
When is the influenza vaccine given?
starting at 6 months annually
**Children younger than 9 years received 2 doses, 1 month apart if it is their first time getting it
When can FluMist be given?
In healthy children/people ages 2- 49 years
When is the MMR vaccine given?
1 year and by 12 years (series of 2)
If exposed to measles or traveling to endemic areas, MMR can be given as early as ______.
6 months old—-***But the patient will need to continue the series at appropriate time.
Ex) 6 month old is going to area with endemic–give vaccine, but then give again at 1 year
Can MMR be given simultaneously with TB testing with purified protein derivative ?
Yes, but prefer to postpone PPD for 4-6 weeks to avoid possible suppressive response to PPD–so either give exact same day or wait 4-6 weeks?
When is the varicella given?
Series of 2 between 12 months and 12 years given a minimum of 3 months apart
Prefer to separate by 1 month from MMR vaccine
When is the Hep A vaccine given?
Series of 2 given 1 to 2 years, 6 months apart
When is the meningococcal vaccine given?
Series of 2 ages 11-12 years and a booster at 16 years
**Adolescents receiving the first vaccine at or after 16 years of age do not need a booster
When is the HPV vaccine given?
Series of 3 starting at 11 or 12 years of age, second dose given 1 month after 1st dose, third given 6 months after initial dose
Males can only receive the ______ HPV vaccine, but females can receive any type.
Quadrivalent (Gardasil) Covers types 6, 11, 16, and 18 and can be given to anyone ages 9-26 years

Those with a history of anaphylaxis to streptomycin
MMR should not be given to________.
Those who are pregnant or immunosuppressed
Varicella is contraindicated in_________.
pregnant women, immunocompromised and those with a streptomycin allergy
Influenza vaccine may be contradicted in those with______.
Egg allergy
