Immune system quiz Flashcards
What are the three functions of the lymphatic system?
- plays a role in immunity
- cycles water that has leaked into tissues and brings it back into the blood.
- lacteals- where products of fat digestion get absorbed.
antigens
stimulate an immune response
are markers, identifiers on cells, can be on viruses too.
antibodies
immunoglobulins, gamma globulins, specific attackers to specific antigens.
produced by activated B cell lymphocytes called plasma cells, proteins in blood
innate immune system
1) physical barriers: skin, hair, cilia, mucous membranes, mucous and chemical secretions, digestive enzymes in mouth, stomach acid.
2) internal defenses (macrophages): inflammatory response, complement proteins, phagocytic cells, natural killer (nk) cells
not specific
Adative immune system
its specific
includes macrophages,
3. antibodies and the humoral immune response, cell mediated immune response, memory response, complement proteins
Humoral immunity natural
passive: through placenta or nursing
active: getting the disease
Humoral immunity artificial
passive: gamma globulin shot (shot of antibodies)
active: vaccination (immunization)
cell mediated immunity (cytotoxic immunity)-T cells - T cells need the antigen presented to them
passive: just receiving antibodies, short term, temporary, not left with memory
active: actually exposed to antigen , stimulated production of antibodies, long term/life long, leaves a memory.
