Immune System and Vaccinations Flashcards
What is our first line of defense against pathogens?
Physical barriers like skin, white blood cells, stomach acid and platelets to help u scab
What are the cells of the immune system?
Phagocytes
Lymphocytes
Macrophages
What are phagocytes and what do they do?
White blood cells
Non specific immunity (eats anything)
Anything foreign is swallowed
What do lymphocytes do?
Specific immunity
Macrophages swallow viruses and put the antigens on its surface.
Signals lymphocytes, which can recognize diff antigens.
When a certain lymphocyte matches the antigens, it starts to multiply and produce antibodies and memory cells.
Antibodies ends shaped like antigens
They group viruses together and wait for phagocyte to swallow everythingg
What is an antigen?
Any substance that causes immune system to produce antibodies
Why does it take less time to recover from a virus you’ve had in the past?
You have memory cells with the antigens of that virus
what are vaccinations?
When u are given a dose of virus or bacteria that has been manipulated to be less dangerous. Produces memory cells for that virus.
What are the pros of vaccination?
Immunity
Limit spread of diseases
Reduce mortality rate
Protect vulnerable groups like children
Decrease effects of some diseases
Benefits to healthcare
What are cons of vaccination?
Produce mild symptoms of disease Human error in preparation administration Allergic reaction Booster shots to keep immunity Toxic effects of mercury
What is a pathogen?
Anything that invades body and requires immune system action.
