Diffusion Flashcards

1
Q

What factors affect diffusion and how?

A
  1. Temp : hotter means more kinetic energy meaning faster movement and diffusion
  2. Size of molecules : smaller means faster diffusion
  3. Concentration gradient : steeper means faster diffusion

Q

What is difference between facilitated and normal diffusion?

A

Facilitated only allows molecules to enter concentration gradient with help of special carrier protein in membrane.

Plasma membrane is semi permeable.

Q

What are the different types of solutions?

A
  1. Isotonic : when osmotic concentration of both solutions are equal
  2. Hypertonic : solution with higher concentration
  3. Hypotonic : solution with lower concentration

Q

What is active transport

A

Molecules moved against concentration gradient through carrier proteins.

Requires energy

Q

What is an example? How does it show active transport

A

Root hair cell in plants. Mineral concentration in soil is lower than in plant. Therefore it goes up the gradient

Q

What is diffusion?

A

When molecules disperse and dissolve throughout a solution.

When molecules move from an area of high concentration to area of low concentration
