Digestive System Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
Special protein that speeds up chemical reactions by providing alternative energy pathway.
Biological catalysts
What happens in the active site?
Substrate can fit into a particular place on enzyme
What are the two ways food is digested?
- Mechanical digestion involves physical breakdown of food
2. Chemical digestion. Enzymes excreted and break down large molecules
What is digestion?
Process by which large insoluble molecules are broken down into soluble molecules in gut of anomal
What are three main types of enzymes?
Carbohydrase
Protease
Lipase
What is a catabolic reaction
Break down large substrate into smaller products
What is anabolic reaction
Join smaller pieces together to make larger
What is optimum temp of enzymes
37 degrees
What does denatured mean?
When temp too high. Enzyme no longer works
What can affect shape of enzyme?
Ph levels
What are parts of digestive system and their functions
Mouth and salivary glands : chops and grinds. Saliva softens food
Esophagus : muscle contract to squeeze food down
Stomach : muscles churn food. Enzymes released. Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria
Pancreas : produces three types of enzymes
Liver and gall bladder : produces bile and relases it into small intestine
Small intestines : major absorption of nutrients into blood. Villi on walls increase surface area
Large intestine : absorbs water
Rectum : where waste is stores
Anus : where waste is passed out
