Immune system Flashcards
Interferons
Proteins that prevent viral replication and dispersion. Cause nearby cells to decrease production of viral and cellular proteins.
Responsible for “flu like symptoms” during a viral infection
What is an MHC molecule
Major histocompatibility complex. Binds to pathogenic peptide (antigen) and carries it to cell surface where it can be recognized by the cells of the adaptive immune system
MHC class I
Nucleated cells in the body
Endogenous pathway because it binds antigens that come from inside the cell
MHC Class II
Mainly displayed by professional antigen presenting cells like macrophages.
Called exogenous pathway because the antigens originated outside the cell
Neutrophils
Most populous leukocyte in blood. Very short lived.
Phagocytic and target bacteria.
Dead ______ collections are responsible for the formation of pus during an infection
Neutrophil
Eosinophils
Involved in allergic reactions and invasive parasitic infections
Release large amounts of histamine when activated
Histamine
Inflammatory mediator
Causes vasodilation and increases leakiness of blood vessels, allow additional immune cells to move out of the blood stream and into the tissue
Basophils
Involved in allergic response. Least populous leukocyte
