Immune System Flashcards
Humoral Immunity
Mediated by B-cell functions (antibodies)
Cell-Mediated Immunity
Mediated by T-cell functions
B-Lymphocytes
Originate from the bone marrow
When an antigen is present, these turn into plasma cells, which in turn produce antibodies (Ig)
T-Lymphocytes
Originate from the bone marrow but mature in the thymus
Healthy immune system has twice as many T-Helper cells as T-Suppressor cells
Cytotoxic T Cells
Directly kill their targets by causing cell lysis
T-Helper Cells
Direct the actions of many other components of the immune system
T-Suppressor Cells
Limit or control the immune response
Overactive T-Suppressor cells may be responsible for clinically significant cancer cases by permitting tumor growth beyond immune system control
Other Cell-Mediated Immune System Cells
Macrophages (derived from monocytes)
Natural Killer cells
Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (neutrophils)
Immune System
Participates in anaphylactic reactions
Responsible for rejection of kidney, liver, and heart transplants
