Immune System Flashcards
What are the 3 main components
Physical, chemical, cellular
What is the body’s first line of defence
The natrual barrier
How does the epidermis control invading pathogens
It is an impermeable membrane that secrets microbial peptides to kill them
What is the ciliated epithelium of the lungs
Ciliated mucus membrane
What is the role of mucus
To trap any particles
Why does the cilia vibrate
To push the mucus up to the oesophagus where it is swallowed
What is the second line of defence
Saliva and stomach acid
Where is lysosomes found
In salvia
What is the function of immunoglobulin
To attach to an invading pathogen and inhibit function found in saliva
What happens in the inflammatory response in the second line of defence
Injured cells secrete danger signals
Capillaries dilate
Pyrogens are released
Pain receptors are activated
White blood cells go to injury cite
What effect does the secretion of danger signals have
Causes mast cells to secrete histamine and prostaglandins which attracts immune cells to injury site
Purpose of dilating capillaries
Allow more fluid to injury site
Effect of pyrogens
Increases temperature
What are phagocytes
White blood cells
Function of the inflammatory response
Limits spread of infection
Prevent further damage
Dilutes / remove toxins
Removes damaged cells and tissues
